Dr. John – The Nite Tripper is honoring Europe with this tour promoting his fantastic new cd “Ske-Dat-De-Dat: The Spirit Of Satch”; his very personal interpretation of songs by the trumpet legend Louis Armstrong . Tonight he's playing the elegant theatre De Roma in Antwerpen. During the summer he had some health-problems, so everybody was eagerly awaiting the show to start to observe his actual physical condition.
But first it was Belgian Blues’N Roll Duo Roland and Boogie Boy who took the stage and started the concert. They thrilled out the sold-out De Roma with titles likes ‘Jerry Roll’ or ‘Sugar Mama'. It was specially charismatic Roland with his magnificent guitar-solos who proved what a master he is. The old, but still young boys, were great and their conclusion ‘The Thrill Is Gone’ was also the highlight of the set.
A standing ovation was their award!
When Dr. John a.k.a. Mac Rebennack got on stage with his magic-walking stick he got overwhelmed by a loud-blast of applause. Everybody got aware of his physical problems, but like a positive voodoo-miracle when he started to play the
first piano rhythms of “Iko Iko”, the N’awlinz Anthem of the Mardi Gras Indians, all these problems faded away.
His fingers were playin’the rhythms so greatly and forcefully and his voice was passionate and powerful.
He had gathered new band-mates around him and it was specially the trombone lady and also band-conductor Sarah Morrow who filled the audience with enthusiasm with some fine solo playing.
Dr John paid a tribute to his whole career by playin’ songs from all decades, specially “Goin’ Back To New Orleans” and later “Walk On Guilded Splinters” were acclaimed and absolute highlights.
With “WOGS” he celebrated his famous gris-gris-sticks percussion solo, a magic moment!
During “Let the Good Times Roll” Mac switched to the guitar and proved by his solos that he’s an outstanding instrumentalist there too.
He played two songs from his new cd, which were specially acclaimed by the jazz-freaks,‘What A Wonderful World’ and ‘Sometimes I Feel Like a Motherless Child’.
Dr. John had De Roma rocking with his interpretation of the Koko Taylor song “Wang Dang Doodle”, during which he wildly hit the keys of his black grand-piano, shoutin’ all bad ghosts, spirits, devils and witches away.
His virtuoso, fantastic guitar player Dave Yoke came under the spotlights with a brilliant solo.
“Such A Night” ended this phenomenal “Grande Soirée De Concert”.
Hyper-pleased and joyful fans thanked Dr. John with a standing ovations
